Emulation - driving force to bring major projects to finish line

“Now more than ever, cadres and Party members must uphold their sense of responsibility and exemplify dedication, prioritising collective interests above all else, embracing innovation, creativity, and bold breakthroughs, even at the cost of sacrifice, to drive national development,” emphasised General Secretary To Lam during the National Conference on December 1, 2024, on the implementation of Resolution No.18-NQ/TW.

This statement has not only inspired the nation but has also led many to reflect on their daily work.

In a cluttered room filled with books and research projects from the Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Development Science (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), Professor Pham Hong Tung, despite the year’s end, showed no signs of a festive mood. Speaking passionately about upcoming tasks, he remarked “Our country is at a pivotal moment! To seize this, we must unite and emulate. Patriotism starts from simple things—each of us striving to fulfil our responsibilities to the best of our ability.”

Across the nation, the atmosphere resembles a massive construction site, with people racing against time in various movements such as “500 Days and Nights to Complete 3,000 km of Expressways” and “A United Nation to Eliminate Temporary and Dilapidated Housing by 2025.” Previously, the movement to complete the circuit 3 transmission line from Quang Binh to Hung Yen was successfully concluded ahead of schedule. This project was energised during the commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (September 2), just over six months after its initiation by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

"In 2025, the Government is prioritising growth, aiming for an 8% GDP increase to create momentum for the 2021–2030 plan. The targets include completing at least 3,000 km of expressways, finalising Long Thanh Airport, and eliminating temporary and dilapidated housing nationwide."

Experience has shown that when the Party provides guidance, the Government aligns, the National Assembly agrees, and the people support, the focus is on execution, not delays. Major projects have been completed through collective and individual efforts. Leaders, supervisors, workers, and labourers alike have joined forces with a united spirit, working through holidays and weekends to ensure success.

Reflecting on these achievements, Prime Minister Chinh expressed his gratitude to all parties involved, particularly the workers and engineers who braved harsh weather conditions, especially in the central region—known for heavy rains and scorching heat, where temperatures often exceeded 50°C.

The early completion of the 500kV Line is a testament to the power of emulation, which fostered an environment of innovation, hard work, and resilience against all odds.

Building on this success, efforts are underway to complete the second phase of the North-South Expressway (2021–2025) by April 30, 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of Vietnam’s reunification. This 500-day race is now in its final stages, with over 1,000 km of the expressway to be completed, contributing to the overarching goal of more than 3,000 km ahead of schedule.

The Ministry of Transport has mandated tight control over its progress to meet these ambitious goals. All groundwork, including roadbeds, bridges, and tunnels, must be finished by December 31, 2024, enabling the simultaneous construction of road surfaces and traffic safety systems. The integration of smart traffic management systems is also being accelerated to ensure full functionality upon project completion.

The North-South Expressway is a key national project with significant socio-economic implications. On-site, workers and leaders are emulating with enthusiasm and determination to meet the set goals. The emulation spirit is proving to be a vital force, enabling the nation to overcome challenges and achieve its objectives.

Looking ahead, major tasks remain, including the North-South High-Speed Railway project, which offers both opportunities and challenges. In a recent discussion, Professor Phung Huu Phu expressed his thoughts: “Generation after generation, we must continue the tradition of emulation and genuine efforts rooted in each individual’s passion. This requires innovation, boldness, and unwavering commitment to the common good.”

From past successes, it is clear that fostering the emulation spirit requires strategic planning and concrete actions. Leaders across sectors are spearheading these movements, motivating teams with clear goals and timely recognition. The solidarity and cooperation among units and localities have created a synergistic force.

As the Lunar New Year approaches, the festive atmosphere blends with stories of pride and determination. In markets bustling with New Year shoppers, a worker shares cheerfully, “My husband will spend Tet at the southern construction site, and I’ll visit him.” A father points out power lines to his daughter, saying, “Those lines up there were strung by me and my colleagues.” Amidst the preparations for spring, a quiet pride and happiness permeate everywhere./.
